Ben Grace was commissioned to capture the gallery imagery for SÓNic Interventions, a series of evening performances presented by SÓN, Southampton’s professional orchestra, in response to ARTIST ROOMS: Gerhard Richter.
Curated by Artistic Director and Conductor Robin Browning, the events brought live music directly into the Gallery spaces alongside Richter’s work, creating a dialogue between visual art and performance. The programme ranged from Bach and minimalism to contemporary and improvised music, including newly commissioned works created specifically for the series.
Across four interventions — Bach & Abstract, Minimalism, 48 Portraits and 220 Fragments — SÓN musicians and guest artists explored different aspects of Richter’s practice, with the final event inviting the audience itself to participate in the compositional process through musical chance and crowd-composing.
Ben’s photography documented the performances within the gallery, capturing the musicians, audience and artworks together and the unique atmosphere created by bringing live performance into the exhibition space.
